We are delighted to announce a special Conducting Day with Philip Harper, taking place at Routh Hall, Bromsgrove School, on Saturday 24 July 2027.
Running from 9.00am to 5.00pm, the day will give conductors and aspiring conductors the opportunity to work directly with one of the most successful musical directors in the brass band world.
Philip has been Musical Director of the Cory Band since 2012, leading the band to a remarkable series of major titles, including victories at the European Championships, British Open, National Finals and Brass in Concert. In 2016, Cory became the first band in history to win all four major titles in the same calendar year.
From Easter 2027, Philip will also become Director of Artistic Planning of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, taking responsibility for shaping future artistic programmes and leading the Youth Band’s 2027 summer course.
The EIBBSS Conducting Day will draw on that wealth of experience, giving participants the chance to explore the practical skills behind effective musical leadership.
There will also be plenty of opportunity for participants to receive direct feedback from Philip throughout the day.
The event is designed to be valuable to conductors at every stage of their development — from experienced musical directors looking to refine their approach to players who are considering stepping onto the podium for the first time.
Participants are also encouraged to bring their instruments and experience parts of the day from the player’s perspective, working alongside members of the EIBBSS tutor team.
Philip’s reputation extends well beyond contest success. His work as a composer, educator and musical director has taken him around the world, and he has played a significant role in developing brass musicians and conductors through courses, workshops and educational projects. Most recently, his international educational work has included directing brass band courses in Japan.
For anyone interested in understanding what makes a rehearsal work, how a conductor communicates effectively or how musical ideas can be turned into convincing performances, the EIBBSS Conducting Day offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from one of the leading figures in the movement.
