Conducting Day
EIBBSS is delighted to announce a special one-day Conducting Masterclass with Philip Harper, taking place at Routh Hall, Bromsgrove School on Saturday 24 July 2027.
Philip is one of the most successful and respected conductors in the brass band world and is Artistic Director of EIBBSS. His conducting career has included extraordinary success with Cory Band, while his work as a composer, educator and musical director has taken him around the world. In 2027 he will also become Artistic Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.
The masterclass will offer conductors and aspiring conductors an opportunity to spend an intensive day exploring the skills that sit behind effective musical leadership.
The day will consider areas including:
baton and conducting technique
score preparation and interpretation
rehearsal technique
communicating musical ideas effectively
Programme Planning
The masterclass is designed to be valuable both to those already conducting bands and to musicians who are interested in developing their conducting skills for the first time.
Philip has a particular passion for developing the next generation of musical leaders and his work with EIBBSS has placed a strong emphasis on practical conducting experience, rehearsal technique, leadership and constructive feedback.
Whether you are an established conductor looking to refine your skills, a player beginning to explore conducting or simply keen to understand more about what happens on the other side of the music stand, this promises to be a fascinating and rewarding day.
The Conducting Day will give participants a chance to explore all aspects of brass band conducting with Philip Harper, Artistic Director of EIBBSS, Cory Band and the NYBBGB. There will be practical sessions on gesture technique, a discussion of rehearsal technique and further sessions on score preparation and programme planning, with plenty of opportunity to get feedback directly from Philip Harper.
