Steven Roberts – Vocal and Choreography Coach

Steven Roberts is an experienced Conductor and Musical Director. Primarily working with choirs, he has also conducted orchestras, wind bands and brass bands both within the UK and internationally.

He is currently Conductor of Altrincham Choral Society, Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and Honley Male Voice Choir.

He is a member of the Association of British Choral Directors, a life member of the Royal Philharmonic Society, is Chair of the Trustees of The British and International Federation of Festivals and sits on the Music Partnership Board for Kirklees Year of Music.

He began his early musical training playing brass and piano, with early experience of playing in orchestras, before joining his local brass band. He finally found his ‘instrument’ when given the opportunity to try the Euphonium one evening in the band room. During his undergraduate training he studied Piano, Brass, Voice and Conducting.

He researched conductor training as part of his Master of Education degree and has since worked both within music education and more recently as a freelance musician. He has maintained his links with brass bands through his choral conducting, but as Musical Director of the Gary Clarke Company he toured extensively with COAL and WASTELAND, both contemporary dance pieces which brought together dance, brass and voice.

Through this collaboration he has worked with many players from Championship bands throughout the country and in recognition of his links with the Gary Clarke Company and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band he was made Honorary Vice President in 2018.

He is very much looking forward to bringing choral singing to BIBBSS.
