Percussion Tutor (Tuned) and Logistics
Gareth is a percussionist with the world famous Black Dyke Band. He began his playing career in the Whitwell brass band at the age of 9 and has since been on to perform on the concert and contest platform with many of the country’s leading Brass Bands including Carlton Main Frickley, Desford, Tredegar, Fairey, Brighouse and Rastrick and Grimethorpe. During his time as a percussionist with the Desford Colliery Band, Gareth had the opportunity to travel to many parts of the world including Vietnam, Thailand, Dubai and Singapore. While on these trips Gareth delivered a number of percussion masterclasses at many of the establishments they visited on their trips including the Harrow international school and the Mahidol university of Music in Bangkok. Gareth has also performed in Austria with the Leyland band as part of the Innsbruck promenade concert series and competed at both the French open and world music contest in Kerkrade (Holland) with the Carlton main Frickley band.
Gareth Joined the Black Dyke band at the beginning of 2019 and has enjoyed working with Music Director Professor Nicholas Childs and the rest of the band as they perform numerous concerts around the world. He has played on many of the bands latest recordings including the bands latest CD release which showcases the music of composer Philip Wilby. Gareth is looking forward to more exciting performances coming up with Black Dyke including trips to Switzerland and Japan as well as contest appearances at the British Open Championships and the National Championships of Great Britain.
Away from brass banding Gareth plays regularly with orchestras in Nottingham, Sheffield and Birmingham.
Gareth currently works as a secondary school music teacher locally at Shirebrook Academy. He has recently completed a music degree with the Open University and is currently completing an MA in Music alongside his other musical commitments. Gareth is really looking forward to being the Tuned percussion tutor on the 2022 Bolsover International Brass Band Summer School and is really excited to be working alongside Steve Jones on “Kit”.
