Chris Binns – Associate Tutor

Chris hails from Rochdale, Lancashire and originally started playing the cornet aged 8. After a year it was deemed for the best that he should be given a trombone! Whilst under the tutorage of former Grimethorpe Principal Trombone Richard Brown, Chris progressed very quickly on the trombone and was solo trombone of local championship section outfit Milnrow Band at just 13. At 16 he joined the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and became the third generation in his to join the organisation. He also attained Principal Trombone seat, a seat previously held by his father!

In 2013 Chris commenced what proved to be a very enjoyable and successful 4 years at the Royal Northern College of Music.  In this time, he was brass finalist in the RNCM Concerto Competition, Principal Trombone of the auditioned RNCM Symphony Orchestra for 4 years and most notably a member of the ITF ‘Emory Remington’ Trombone Ensemble prize with the RNCM Trombone Octet.  At the end of Chris’ first year at RNCM, he joined Black Dyke Band on Principal Trombone.  A position he held for 2 years, notable highlights include the European Brass Band Championship win in 2015 and tours to New York and Japan.

In 2016, whilst still at the RNCM, Chris left Black Dyke to concentrate on his increasing freelance career. He graduated with in 2017 with First Class Honours.

In 2018 Chris joined Grimethorpe Colliery Band on Principal Trombone and in 2022 won the Stanley Wainwright Memorial Trophy as the Best Soloist at the British Open Championship.

Chris has also tutored on the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain, National Youth Brass Band of Scotland and Wessex Summer School, and regularly tutors on the Grimethorpe Besson Youth Band. Away from banding, Chris regularly freelances with symphony orchestras across the UK and also teaches brass throughout the North West.
