EIBBSS launches Commission Strategy
Elgar International Brass Band Summer School (EIBBSS) announces an innovative Commission Strategy for 2023 and beyond. EIBBSS prides itself on placing the delegate at the heart of future planning and has elected to commission three composers in 2023 for the 2024 EIBBSS Course to write works specifically for the next year’s cohort.
The three composers commissioned in 2023 are Philip Sparke, Alan Fernie and Lucy Pankhurst, who are all world leading composers within the world of brass bands. Each work will be premiered at the 2024 Summer School and will be then available for publication from the respective composers.
Carole Crompton (Course Director) commented: “This is an exciting new initiative by EIBBSS underlines our commitment to engage and challenge our delegates and this Commission Strategy will form an important part of our future development”.
Philip Sparke and Alan Fernie will compose music for our delegates, while Lucy Pankhurst has will provide music that will put our Tutor Ensemble through their paces.
Phillip Harper (Artistic Director) stated: “The EIBBSS Commission Strategy is a fantastic idea, not only for the delegates but also to augment the existing brass band repertoire with new and creative material. It also demonstrates EIBBSS’s commitment to its core values of enjoyment of music making”.
The British Bandsman (Media Sponsor) added: “This is a wonderful initiative, it is great to see new commissions and with such high profile and highly regarded composers, banding needs more original music and this is a great step from EIBBSS.”
